Particularly with the unfortunate advent of COVID-19, effective online fundraising has gone beyond complementary from a development standpoint and become truly essential. It's not enough to ask Facebook followers to do birthday fundraisers for you (though you still should!); nonprofits should be actively brainstorming and implementing strategies to maximize online giving.
If this just sounds like a bunch more work you don't have the staff for, remember: executing an online fundraising campaign is easier by far than putting on a gala, silent auction, bake sale, or any other in-person event. Done right, e-campaigns can get pretty close to "Set it and forget it." I'll show you how.
What does your organization need? What will you do once you get it? Think of this part as an unofficial grant application, and the grantor is, collectively, your supporters.
Be realistic, but ambitious. Make sure there's room for matching funds and small contributions. Don't be afraid to ask for big numbers if you can demonstrate the need!
Nope, you don't need a pro designer; I can help with that too! A campaign logo lends legitimacy to every post and graphic. Don't forget the hashtag!
Every. Penny. Counts. Don't undervalue the 10- and 20-dollar gifts; instead, show their impact! For example, "$10 will feed three shelter cats for five days." That means something!
Start early and stick to a campaign schedule. If there's time, ramp up anticipation and do a campaign launch. Make sure your board and stakeholder A-team know what's coming, and get to work on matching funds!
Celebrate every donation; thank every donor. Remind supporters of any matching funds, incentives, prizes, or deadlines. Stick to a post-campaign communications plan to ensure everyone feels engaged and appreciated.
